The Canara Union
Canara Union traces its roots back to 1900 when a small group of Chitrapur Saraswats in Bangalore, led by Dr. Badakere Venkat Rao, formed a social circle. The establishment of the Mysore Spinning & Weaving Mills in 1904 brought more Saraswat families to the city, leading to the growth of Canara Union’s activities.
In 1929, Tombat Sakharam Rao donated Rs. 600 to Canara Union so that they could buy a plot of land in Malleswaram from B. Sanjiv Rao, where the first building, now the Badakere Venkat Rao Block, was constructed in 1931. The Tombat Sakharam Rao Cultural Hall, built in 1950, has since been expanded to serve as a Kalyana Mantapa and cultural venue. In 1983, the Parijnan Hall – Prakash Courts was inaugurated to honor Prakash Padukone’s historic All England Badminton Championship win.
For over 125 years, Canara Union has supported the community through scholarships, medical relief, and aid during times of distress, including COVID relief and vaccination drives. As we strive to maintain our historic buildings and expand our charitable services, we appeal to our well-wishers to contribute to the Building Fund and help sustain our legacy for future generations.
